♦ Summer Trivia:

What is the warmest tree in the garden center?

Answer to follow.

White Clover

To Kill or Not to Kill? – That is the Question!

Out of all the weeds in our lawns,  the one most debated is white clover. While many people want it out of their yards, others can’t seem to get enough of it. Who’s right? Read on and decide for yourself.

Clover is a member of the pea family and as such is a legume. Like all legumes, (beans, peas, peanuts, vetch) sets its own nitrogen. This is beneficial especially to lawns with poor fertility – in fact, clover is a sign of low nitrogen in soils. Actually, some early seed mixtures contained clover as well. The other benefit of clover is that the flowers are an important source of nectar for bees in their honey production, with clover honey being the most common honey to purchase. So with no clover… the price of honey would greatly increase.

However, all is not well. Clover is a major weed for those trying to maintain a well manicured lawn and can require great effort to eliminate. Also those same bees can be troublesome to kids and pets outside – Be careful walking barefoot.

Herbein’s, as usual, is here to help both concerned groups. For those wanting more clover, we offer a 3 pound bag of Dutch White Clover Seed for $29.99. For those who want less, we offer several herbicides. The most popular is Bonide Chickweed, Clover & Oxalis Killer which is available in both ready-to-use and concentrate. As with most perennial weeds, fall is the best time to apply for long term success.
