Does Herbein’s Carry Pennsylvania Mix Grass Seed?

This is a question that I am asked quite often. My answer is the same each time. “YES, I only carry grass seed that will grow in Pennsylvania.” “Pennsylvania Mix” is another example – like the coated seed – of convincing an unknown buyer to purchase their product. On the other hand, here at Herbein’s we like to help educate our customers.

There are two types of grass; warm season – which prefer the heat of the South, and cool season grass for our northern climate. Warm season types include Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoyia and even the dreaded crabgrass. They prefer and thrive in the heat and generally die off with frost and cold weather. They will not survive here in Pennsylvania. Herbein’s Lawn Center will not carry any of these.

On the other hand, cool season grass – ryegrass, tall fescue, fine fescue, and Kentucky Bluegrass do great in the Lehigh Valley. They grow best between 65° -75° and go dormant, but not die, in the winter. These are the ones familiar to our customers; Tri-Rye, Shade/Sun, Showcase, Full Sun and of course, All American. They are all Pennsylvania blends or mixes.

So don’t be fooled by fancy marketing. Stop in to Herbein’s Lawn Center and discuss your situation. Together we will decide which of our “Pennsylvania” grass seeds is right for you.
